Meet Finn // In Home Newborn Photography Glasgow

in home newborn photography Glasgow West End

In home newborn photography Glasgow West End: a natural newborn photography session featuring a brand new baby, a lovely tenement flat, two very smitten parents and two very fluffy cats.

POV: Your baby is brand new and you’re still setting into life at home with a tiny human.

You’re full of love and joy, looking at this tiny person in wonder. You’ve created them!

At the same time you are exhausted, sore, and totally winging it. You’re recovering from birth, while at the same time trying to figure out how to feed/clean/settle a baby who cannot tell you what they want or need. It’s a lot.

You want to document this very special (and very fleeting) time, but the thought of having to pack up all your things, get yourselves ready and over to a studio, and deal with all the unknowns of taking your baby to a strange new place is stressful, to say the least.

That’s where in home newborn photography comes in.

What is in home newborn photography?

Also known as lifestyle newborn photography, these sessions take place in the comfort of your own surroundings. In home newborn photography is about capturing a moment in time, documenting life as it really was in those early days of parenthood (minus the dirty nappies and 3 am feeds).

In home newborn sessions focus on your baby’s natural movements and interactions: yawns and stretches, cuddles and feeds, all the special little moments that happen between your baby and the world around them.

You can move from room to room in the house, with their first home as the backdrop in all the photos. You never know when you might move, or even redecorate- how nice will it be to show your child what their very first home looked like one day?

Why in home newborn photography?

As well as the beauty of having those photos in your baby’s first home, in home newborn photography is a lot more comfortable for everyone.

First of all, you don’t have to plan and pack all the stuff you need- it’s on hand! I know how long it takes to get out of the house with a baby and the last thing you want in those early weeks is to have to think about all the extras you might want for the photos too! No need to worry about forgetting things or not having enough outfit changes, in home sessions make it worry free.

Second- it’s YOUR OWN SPACE. Of course you are going to feel more comfortable in a familiar space, and your baby will too. You’ll be able to relax a lot easier, and feel more like yourselves- which is essentially all you need for a great photoshoot.

Finally- the photos feel more REAL. If you’re looking for natural/documentary style newborn photos it just doesn’t make sense to have photos done in a studio. You want real backdrops that mean something to you, and show off your own personal style. Candid newborn photography works best in a real life setting, not an artificial one.

What if my house is messy/dark/not ‘instagrammable?’

I’ll tell you a secret- most houses are at least one of those things- and that is absolutely okay. Almost every time I get a newborn enquiry in I get asked something along the lines of “we haven’t had a chance to decorate yet” or “I’m worried there’s not enough light” or “how will you work around all the mess?” and in almost 15 years of doing this it has never been a problem.

Your house is a living space- not a showroom- and it doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, I’d think it was really weird if it was.

Mess and clutter? I should hope so, you have a new baby at home! We will work around any spaces you don’t want to show, and strategically move things as needed. You’ll get no judgement from me (I have two small kids, and my house is always a mess).

Not a lot of natural light? We will use any windows you do have to make the most of the natural light available and if that’s not enough I have a trusty flash kit I can use to bounce extra light around and still give us a natural look.

Your home isn’t “instagram worthy”?

I hated even writing that term. No one with small children has a perfectly decorated, tidy, organized house. And if they do, I’d love to know what kind of witchcraft they’re using to achieve that. Your home is perfect for photos because it’s YOUR space. End of story.

Baby Finn// In home newborn photography Glasgow West End tenement

I’ve been based in the West End of Glasgow for my entire time living in Scotland, and I have a real love for tenement flats. High ceilings, bay windows and tons of character, they really make an ideal backdrop for photos. Especially when your clients have such excellent taste.

I love shooting in my local neighbourhood(s) and was so pleased to be asked to do this session for adorable Mr Finn here (and his humans and cats too!) We had a lovely, relaxed afternoon with lots of time for feeding and cuddle breaks and captured so many beautiful moments between these two happy new parents and their new addition.

I really struggled to narrow this down to just a handful of photos- if you’re wondering what a full gallery looks like this is only about a third of the photos we created together (there are over 100 images in total). Check them out below!
