A bit more about me

Where to start… I love an adventure. I dream big, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I wholeheartedly believe that life is about experiences, not things. I feel most alive when I’m exploring a new place and I LOVE a good road trip. I’m also into doughnuts, dogs, indie cafes, horror films and all things retro. I’m currently in the chaotic throes of a massive DIY reno of a Victorian Terrace we bought in 2022 (despite having zero experience with DIY).

I’m a fiercely proud female entrepreneur and champion of small businesses – I host a podcast, co host networking events and offer brand coaching: all focused on female founders across Scotland. (Find out more on this at rhiannonlouden.co.uk.)

In 2017 I added the “mum” title to my resume and it’s been quite the journey. Charlotte is now seven and Poppy is three, and their joy & wonder for the world around them is infectious. They are a constant reminder of how fast time flies and how important it is to appreciate the small, quiet moments too. In April of 2024, Poppy was diagnosed with a rare genetic neurological disorder called Rett Syndrome, affecting only one in 12,000 girls worldwide. Poppy is our ray of sunshine, and despite being non verbal and physically disabled, she is the happiest little human you’ll ever meet. Her big sister is a brave and proud advocate and together as a family we are working hard to learn, educate, and make sure Poppy’s voice, and the voices of others like her, are heard.

I also have a 14 year old rescue dog called Dexter, a cat called Luna, and a partner in crime called Paul, who is the balance to my spontaneity and is as supportive as it gets. He’s also the voice of reason (and meanness) who stops me from trying to adopt a new animal every month.

How did I become a natural wedding & family photographer?

I have always been drawn to a good story: my nose was buried in books as a kid and later, my eyes were glued to films as a teen. I studied journalism at University and I’ve loved taking photos for as long as I can remember. For me, photography IS storytelling– capturing real life moments honestly and carefully curating them to share a story.

I think my personality made my drawn to photography too: I’m definitely an empath and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I used to think this was a weakness but now I’ve realized it’s my greatest superpower. I find the joy in the small moments and I see so much beauty in chaos and imperfection. I’m a sucker for raw emotion and (disclaimer) I’ve been known to shed a quiet tear during those honest moments at weddings. My other favourite part of this job is meeting new people and watching families grow; many of my clients have become friends over the years!

I now have sixteen years of experience (how has it been that long?!) working as a professional wedding and family photographer across Scotland, the UK, Europe and Canada.

I studied photography, film and media production at uni and I left with a degree in Journalism, which really helped me to develop my candid, documentary style. I bought my first “real” camera back in 2008 and spent several years learning, experimenting and finding my niche before I was ready to give it my all. I didn’t know it then, but in retrospect this is where I was meant to be: exploring, meeting new people, telling stories, getting creative (and living a lifestyle that suits my stubborn, rebellious nature. 9-5 would never have worked for me!)

A few honest facts

I couldn’t live without…

Coffee! I’d blame the kids, but the truth is I’ve always loved a good caffeine fix- comes with the territory when you’re a night owl in a morning person’s world.

Also… doughnuts.

If I could be friends with one TV character….

This is a toughie. It’s a three way tie between David Rose, Michael Scott, and Tom Haverford I think. Leslie Knope is next in line.

Things I don’t love…

(From least to most offensive): Yoga, reality tv, olives, early mornings and instant coffee (the real stuff only please!)

Ten years ago…

If you would have told me I would be working full time as a photographer, with my own business, in another country, I would have laughed and said “yeah, right”!

Same goes for telling me I’d be renovating a 150 year old house, or parenting two children.

Somehow I ended up here though, and I feel pretty darn lucky to be where I am. When I say this is way more than a job to me I mean it – I could not feel luckier to have so many couples and families trust me to capture their most precious moments for them. And I don’t ever take it for granted.
