glasgow wedding photography

Nicola & Mark chose the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow for their engagement session, a spot they often visit together for a long walk on a nice day. Despite rain the entire rest of the week, we somehow managed to get clear skies and lots of sunshine- talk about good luck!

Nicola & Mark are getting married at Glenbervie House this September, and were all smiles when talking about their day! We took a relaxed stroll through the park, chatting about their upcoming wedding and laughing along the way. I love a good proposal story, and they were kind enough to share their with me during our session:

Mark proposed to Nicola while they were on holiday in Thailand; he arranged a private dinner for two on the beach, and planned it out just perfectly as a resort across the water had fireworks going off that evening! An intimate sunset proposal on  the beach- now that’s a vacation they won’t soon forget!

The joy and love on this day was larger than life.

Not sure how else to describe it.

So much fun, so much laughter, and a focus on the only things that truly matter: two people very much in love, great food, drinks and music, and being surrounded by your favourite people. ❤️

What a day it was- and what a team this was to work with. LOVE this venue!!!

🎸Belladrum Music Festival Wedding 🎶 Featuring Sop 🎸Belladrum Music Festival Wedding 🎶

Featuring Sophie + Craig- two of the most happy, fun, in the moment, in love people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

These two hired a campervan, convinced 40 of their closest friends and family to join them at @belladrumfestival for their wedding and spent the entire weekend celebrating their love in the most fun and relaxed way- all while just being themselves.

More from this one soon, but for now a shout out to their incredible team of unique Scottish wedding suppliers:

Using the R word is never okay. 😡 And it is most Using the R word is never okay. 😡

And it is most certainly not okay if you are someone with a huge platform, who speaks at huge industry events, who is as an educator for those in the industry, well known and marketing themself as an “expert.”

This week, Jai Long shared an episode of his podcast which included use of the R word accompanied by lots of laughter. Bad enough that it happened, but it was no accident. Not only did he not edit it out and chose to share it, he actually HIGHLIGHTED that portion of the conversation by exporting it out and sharing it as a YouTube clip. He captioned the term R**ardmaxing. Him and another industry “expert” laughing and tossing out a derogatory term like it was nothing- and then drawing extra attention towards that choice.

As mother to a complex needs child with intellectual disabilities, and as an advocate for other children and people in that community, I am disgusted- and absolutely raging.

As a human being, I am saddened.

And as a photographer who works hard to be inclusive and expects others to do the same: I am so disappointed. Not only that this attitude exists, but that someone at the “top” of the industry would choose not only to engage in it but to promote it on their big platform.

Fellow photographers, please call this behaviour out. Please don’t support people like this. Please consider who you are hurting when you use derogatory terms (my beautiful daughter for one), when you choose to run your business in a way that excludes anyone- and especially those from marginalised communities who already have to fight so hard for their rights in a way you can’t even imagine.

Between this and the previous bigoted incident I posted about a few days ago (UK photographer telling a queer couple she doesn’t photograph queer weddings because it doesn’t “align” with her beliefs) I am so disappointed in this industry.

Let’s stop giving these people platforms, let’s stop supporting them, and let’s stop allowing this stuff to happen without accountability.

A big thanks to Lisa from @photographyfarm for using her platform for good and calling this behaviour out. 💪

Imagine telling a couple you only photograph certa Imagine telling a couple you only photograph certain "types" of love.

That their love, who they identify as, what abilities they have, or what they look like don't fit with your business model.

I couldn't be more digusted if I tried.

This industry needs to do better. Inclusivity matters. Diversity matters. Representation matters.

Those at the "top" of the industry: the big wedding magazines and blogs, the photographers with massive followings: they need to start celebrating ALL love. We don’t need to see any more wedding stories from billionaire celebrities or model couples. We need to see real, everyday, wonderfully diverse people of all shapes and sizes, of all genders, all skin colours and all abilities. (And while we’re at it- more weddings that didn’t cost six or seven figures. 🙄)

And us suppliers? It's not enough to say we are inclusive. We need to do the work.

We need to proudly show ALL love. We need to fight against this story we've been told, time and time again in society, that we have to look or love a certain way for our stories to be worthy of sharing.

And we need to do the work: we need to read books and listen to perspectives and attend workshops created by people from these marginalized communities we claim to be allies for. (Thanks to the amazing @kimwilliamsweddings for always advocating for this and inspiring me to do the work myself over the past few years).

If you are two people who love each other- I'd be honoured to photograph your love. End of story.

(except maybe if you disagree on the above points. In that case, we are morally incompatable and in that case I really don't want to work with you).

And if you work in this industry and are doing your part to promote inclusivity and diversity? Keep going. It matters. Now more than ever.
